The trail begins and ends at the end of Burns Road on Shelter Island
The Coecles Harbor Marine Water Trail is a joint project of the Shelter Island Kayak Tours, The Nature Conservancy and the Town of Shelter Island. This 5 mile round trip self-guided paddle explores a history of the area, marine life and the habitat.

Launch into Napeague Harbor, which opens into Gardiners Bay. Access via Napeague Harbor Road off Montauk Highway, appox. 1 mile west of Hither Hills State Park campgrounds. Go north on road to end (use parking area for the Walking Dunes). Launch from adjacent beach. Parking fee must be paid during fee collection season.

Launch site access at Gardiners Bay to the south and Long Beach (Hallock’s) Bay to the north. Kayak drop-off is approximately halfway around the circle adjacent to the parking lot. Hallock’s Bay is a 30 yard carry and Gardiners Bay requires a 50 yard carry. Kayaking available April – October. Parking fee must be paid during fee collection season.
Calverton/Riverhead
Take a paddle down the shallow, slow moving Peconic River. The upper portion of the Peconic River is narrow and winding but broadens as you paddle eastward. This beautiful trail allows you to see the diverse wildlife and habitats of the Peconic River and is a great activity for the spring, summer and even fall! There are several launch sites on the Peconic River to lengthen or shorten the trip depending on your preference. Note there are four dams on the Peconic River and you will have to walk your kayak across the street to continue.

This park offers saltwater fishing, surfcasting for bluefish and striped bass; also, shore fishing for snappers and blowfish. Fishing permitted between sunrise and sunset. Limited hand and trailer launching areas available, check with park personnel.

Fishing is allowed from the shoreline. Common fish species include striped bass, weakfish, Atlantic
mackerel, flounder, bluefish, tautog, ling and eel blowfish.

Forge Pond is part of the Peconic River system. Forge Pond is one of Long Island’s premier fishing spots for largemouth bass. For the last decade, the average catch rate for Angler Diary Cooperators has been about one bass for every two hours of fishing effort. Six to eight pound bass are reported from the river every year. From the access site anglers can either steer downstream to fish the main pond or upstream to fish the river. The numerous small coves, overhanging trees, and lily pad beds are prime cover for big bass and monster chain pickerel. A small boat is extremely helpful in reaching these features. Forge Pond also offers excellent fishing for sunfish. Crappies and yellow perch are also present, but in lower numbers. Gas Motors Prohibited (Town Law). Hard surface ramp for trailer launch with parking for 10 cars with trailers. Accessible facilities for canoe and kayak launch are also available. Shoreline access is limited.

Fishing and canoeing permitted at Big Reed Pond, noted for its largemouth bass and perch fishing, between sunrise and sunset. Check in and out at the station located at the outer beach entrance on East Lake Drive. On the northern portion, Montauk Park has excellent saltwater fishing for bluefish and striped bass.

Known for largemouth bass, bluegill, and pumpkinseed. Town residents only. Non-residents can fish with a town licensed guide.
Downtown Riverhead, NY
In August, the snappers start to bite and children and adults can fish right from the dock. Striped bass, weakfish, and bluefish may also be caught. Annual Snapper tournament held on the Saturday after Labor Day. The tournament is split into two divisions, adult (16 and over) and youth (15 and under).
Calverton, NY (Access is a DEC parking area off of Route 25. Additionally, The Fisherman’s Deli, located on the south side of Route 25 rents boats and also allows fishermen to launch hand carry boats from their store.)
Upper Mills Pond is just downstream from Forge Pond on the Peconic River. The fish habitat and fishing opportunities are very similar to Forge Pond. Fishing for largemouth bass is very good. Pickerel are also abundant and the sunfish fishing is excellent. A small boat is extremely helpful in fishing this pond.
Before heading out fishing, be sure that you have the appropriate license/permit, and check the most current regulations on the New York Department of Environmental Conservation website.
