The Peconic Estuary Program recently put its finger on the pulse of the Peconics in an attempt to get a sense of the health of the entire system. The result? Compared to other estuaries in the United States, the Peconic Estuary is relatively healthy yet shows signs of environmental stress, particularly in the more densely developed areas and in the tidal creeks.

Published in March 2005, this 88-page report details the status and trends of 18 environmental indicators, including bay scallop landings, wetlands acreage, and Brown Tide blooms.

State of the Bays Science Conference
On April 29, 2005, the Peconic Estuary Program hosted the State of the Bays Science Conference in Riverhead, NY. Nearly 100 scientists, policymakers, and citizens attended the event. The day was a smashing success as attendees strove to answer the question, "What is the environmental state of the bays?"
